You know how most people say that time flies when you’re having fun? This is especially true when it comes to bringing up our children. We all live such hectic daily lives, trying to balance personal and professional commitments and wondering where the time goes. It seems that no sooner have we jumped out of bed in the morning and pulled our children from their nursery bedding, than it is time for a nightcap all over again. A new baby places considerable additional stress on our time and sometimes it is easy to miss those very special moments in the development of our precious child.

Raising children can be one of the most rewarding periods of our lives. You put all that you’ve got into it, and before you know what’s happened, your little baby is going to play group, then away to first grade and soon enough, even asking for the car keys! Try not to let this whirlwind pass you by with little but the memories in your own head. Think about designing and maintaining a memory board to capture all those special moments and store those little bits and pieces that may not mean much to someone else, but have a special meaning to you.

The memory board really should be set up in a high traffic place inside the home – ideally next to the nursery, if possible. Make sure that your board is of a significant size and is made of sturdy material. It’s best if you can get one that’s specifically created for this particular purpose. Have a variety of pins available, so that you don’t have to go hunting every time you want to add something, as this would put you off the most important task of all – which is attaching your memories, don’t forget, to the board.

If you’re a big fan of Harry Potter like me, then you’ll definitely have seen in the latest movie how the school principal stores his most precious memories in a variety of protected vials. That may be fine if you are a wizard, but we will need to rely on our memory board to serve us well.

When it comes to placing items on the memory board, photographs will take up most of the space. In this day and age, you can purchase amazing digital cameras that produce incredible results at a great price, and you can also purchase a photo printer to make it easy for you to print out your cherished memories right away. Don’t let the perfect memories languish on some virtual disk, as you will just forget.

In addition to photographs you might want to place cards from well-wishers, for example. Make sure that you are creative when you place items on the board, not in some regimented fashion, but with a little variety to make it pleasing on the eye. Don’t be tempted to fill up the board completely right away, although you can always prioritize your greatest memories as baby grows older and you need to make room for new pieces.

As you and your baby grow through life, you will find that your memory board starts to contain snippets from school life, sporting achievements and so on, but try and maintain a balance that reflects the very reason for you getting this item in the first place – to keep track of your child’s development. As a nursery decoration the memory board should be on your list of baby accessories to purchase.
