The Cost of Newborn Diapers

Maybe I was naive, but I thought that since you get so much more per package, that newborn diapers were more cost effective. (For those of you without children, every time you move up a size in diapers, you get fewer diapers in the package for the same price.) Then I saw how may newborn diapers we were actually going through and realized that the cost savings were negligible.

Yes, our little bundle of joy was a pooping and peeing machine, and we were going through newborn diapers like crazy. And we weren’t just going through the newborn diapers, either – we were going through everything. Such a wee little thing, but the baby created more laundry by herself than the rest of the family combined.

I wasn’t naive, I knew having a baby was really expensive. But I had been thinking a little further down the road, things like braces and university. I mean, just how much could this little bundle of joy cost? A whole lot, as it turns out.

So now, I’ve turned into that guy. You know, the guy that clips coupons, but not only for newborn diapers, but for other things as well, anything that will help us save money. What happened to me? Now I get all my coupon organized and in an envelope, and go do the shopping.

And I’m also making a list before I go to the grocery store; not only that, but I’m even using the flyers to make my list. While it does save us money, the real reason I do this is not to offset the cost of buying newborn diapers. No, it’s because I’ve been running on less than three hours of sleep for going on three weeks now, and I’ll probably forget everything I came for if I go without a list.

And what I’d probably end up with is just more newborn diapers. Packages and packages of newborn diapers, because I know at least that we need those, even if I’ve forgotten everything else we need. So I’ve started making my list, and I wait anxiously for the flyers to be delivered each week. Then I go through them, very methodically, and make a list of what I need to get from each store so that I get all the best deals.

Still, I’m trying to commit every last moment to memory, depsite the lack of sleep and extra strains on the pocketbook. Because I know that my beautiful baby won’t fit into those newborn diapers for long, that soon I’ll look back and wonder how she ever fit into something so small. So I want to treasure these moments now, when my little child is small enough to still fit into those teeny-tiny newborn diapers.
